My advisor has been on sabbatical for the past few months and during that time he has been on a crusade to save the oceans. There have been several articles featuring his campaigning to stop bottom trawling and recently, a French cartoonist made a little strip about it that has garnered the signatures of half a million people on a petition. While working at Oceana, I actually got to do a lot of research on the effects of bottom trawling (the most destructive form of fishing) and we wrote up a report on it, which you can see here. Actually, the report is mostly about the wonderful organisms that live in the deep and why we should save them, but there is some information in there about trawling as well.

That presentation is really good-- informative and entertaining and sobering at the same time. Someone should print 100,000,000 copies and give it to every 10-year-old. Change on the eco-front seems to be coming a bit less glacially; let's hope we can speed it up so it does some good before too much more damage is done... xx
